Zhang Yue

Zhang YueZhang Yue, founder and chairman of BROAD Group, was born in Changsha in 1960 and graduated in 1980 with a college degree in fine arts, working as a teacher and librarian. He founded BROAD with 3,000 USD in 1988.

Ever since its inception, he has had an innate passion for creative thinking into his company. He has obtained over 100 patents for his inventions: in 1989 the pressure-free hot water boiler, in 1992 the direct-fired chiller (non-electric air conditioning), in 1999 the cooling, heating and power (CHP) system, in 2005 the air purification technology with electrostatic cleaner, in 2007 heat recovery fresh air unit technology, in 2009 the factory-made sustainable building (BSB).  Each of his inventions has revolutionized its industry, making BROAD a globally recognized technological leader.

BROAD is also known for building a 15-storey hotel in only 15 days, the YouTube video of the construction process has been an online hit.

In May, 2011 Zhang Yue, was awarded the Champions of the Earth Award (Entrepreneurial Vision Category) by the United Nations Environment Programme for his commitment to climate change. As UNEP writes "as well as regularly featuring in lists of China’s wealthiest people, founder Zhang Yue has become one of the most outspoken voices on the environment in China, advocating, among other things, for tighter government regulations on insulation and building standards and for the decentralization of power plants." 

In 2003 BROAD supported UNEPs first workshop on Sustainable Consumption in China. The event was held in Changsha, Hunan province, and included an expert working meeting and field trip to Broad Town. China SC Workshop
