- Some words about myself
My main area of interest is European environmental policy, but I hope that the World Resources Forum will develop my understanding of international policy and global resource issues. As an economics student I find the debates about the merits of emissions taxes versus emissions trading particularly interesting, especially now that more carbon trading agreements are implemented. I am also interested in food and water resources and the problems of supply and distribution as the global population increases.
My experience in natural resources thus far has been focused on raising awareness and understanding in the student population. I am currently the chair of the London branch of Oikos International, the student organisation for sustainable economics and management. Through Oikos International I have organised expert panel debates, trips to innovative zero-energy development sites and interactive policy simulation games. I also work for the LSE Sustainable Futures Consulting Group, and have worked on consulting projects to create a Sustainable Events policy and a re-use scheme for the university.
I am very much excited about seeing policy discussions in action and will be interested to see on which points it is most difficult to reconcile the scientific and economic arguments. I am certain that there will be plenty of sound, feasible policy ideas and I can only hope that some of them will be implemented. I was very glad to see that there will be many contributors from countries such as Japan and India, as I know very little about natural resources and consumption in these areas. As an economics student, I am particularly looking forward to the workshop on a new economic framework. The involvement of natural scientists and engineers in the debate will also be a new experience for me, as I study in a specialised social science university where natural scientists are few and far between!
